Switching Transformers
Purpose: Used in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) to transfer energy at high frequencies (typically 20 kHz – 1 MHz).
Key Features:
- High-frequency operation enables smaller size and higher efficiency.
- Core materials: Ferrite (most common), powdered iron, or amorphous alloys.
- Designed for minimal core loss and leakage inductance.
- Isolation between primary and secondary windings for safety.
Applications: AC-DC adapters, DC-DC converters, LED drivers, telecom power systems.
Design Considerations:
- Turns ratio defines voltage transformation.
- Adequate insulation for required isolation voltage.
- Thermal management under full load.
- EMI reduction via shielding or interleaved windings.
