Laser Diodes

Definition: Semiconductor devices that emit coherent light when forward-biased.

Key Parameters:

• • Wavelength: Common at 650nm (red), 808nm, 980nm, 1550nm (IR)
• • Threshold Current: Minimum current to initiate lasing
• • Output Power: Ranges from mW to several Watts
• • Operating Voltage: Typically 1.5V–3V depending on material

Applications: Optical communications, laser printing, barcode readers, medical devices, LiDAR.

Driving Tips: Use constant-current driver; always include optical feedback (photodiode) for power control; avoid ESD and overcurrent.

Note: Sensitive to temperature—use TEC or heatsink when necessary.
