Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB)

Function: Detects earth leakage current and breaks the circuit to prevent electric shock or fire.

Types:

  • Voltage-operated ELCB – Older type, detects voltage on earth wire.
  • Current-operated ELCB (RCD/GFCI) – Modern standard, compares live and neutral currents.

Sensitivity: Typically 30mA for personal protection, 100mA–300mA for equipment/fire protection.

Applications: Residential, commercial, and industrial installations; especially in wet areas (bathrooms, kitchens).

Standards: IEC 61008 / IEC 61009.
