Electric Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC) – Supercapacitor
Type: Electrochemical capacitor (Supercap)
Working Principle: Energy storage via ion adsorption at the electrode-electrolyte interface (double-layer effect), no chemical reaction.
Key Features:
- • Very high capacitance (Farads to kilo-Farads)
- • High power density
- • Long cycle life (>500,000 cycles)
- • Low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance)
- • Voltage typically limited to 2.5V–3.0V per cell
- • Lower energy density than batteries
Common Applications:
- • Backup power systems
- • Regenerative braking in vehicles
- • Power stabilization in renewable energy
- • Short-term energy storage
Materials: Activated carbon electrodes, organic or aqueous electrolyte.
Note: Requires voltage balancing when used in series stacks.
